1:1 coaching to elevate your freelance editing business

Freelancing has the word “free” in it, as in the freedom to create your own schedule, work from your kid’s baseball practice, and throw out your business attire.

But with that freedom also comes uncertainty.

How do I find new clients?

When can I raise my rates?

Why do I feel so lonely?

I know that feeling, because I’m a freelance editor, too.

When I started out as an editor in 2012, there was no welcoming place to start, kind mentor to lean on, or affordable resource hub to learn from. Through a lot of trial and error, I pieced together bits of information and eventually built a thriving editing business. But damn—it was hard.

You support writers, but who supports you?

If you’re feeling…

  • Isolated and lonely…

  • Like a fake who’s about to be discovered…

  • Frustrated by how slowly your business is growing…

…then one-on-one coaching will change your life! I know because, once again, I’ve been there. Receiving quality coaching absolutely changed my business.

You don’t have to struggle through your editing business alone.

There’s a better way, I promise.

Tara really helped me while coaching me for my business. Whether I just needed someone to bounce ideas off of or someone who gave me actionable feedback, she came through. I highly recommend her for anyone who is struggling with their business or thinks they may need a business coach.

Coaching Days

If the usual pace of one-on-one coaching feels a bit slow, or if the idea of a video call feels overwhelming (hello, my neurodivergent friends and stay-at-home parents), then a Coaching Day is a great alternative to a traditional coaching session.

During your Coaching Day, you’ll have full access to me from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Central Time via voice messages and texting on the free Voxer app. The conversation will flow on and off between us all day as you have questions, reflect, and take action.

Coaching Days must be scheduled within 60 days of purchase.

Common Topics

  • Working through mindset blocks or imposter syndrome

Meet your Coach

Hi! I’m Tara (she/her).

When I started my freelance editing journey in 2012, it didn’t take me long to realize I was on a not-so-clear and lonely trajectory. There were no clear guidelines for what to do, no mentors to lean on, and a hell of a lot of exclusionary practices in the publishing industry.

Eff. That.

That’s why I decided to be the change and share what I had learned. No matter your background, if you have the determination, passion for work, a supportive community, and a natural inclination for badassery, then you can do this! You’re the expert in your life and work. And I’m here to support you as you pursue your dreams.

Now, for your questions…

  • Anyone can benefit from coaching, no matter how much experience they have. I specifically help editors and other publishing professionals who are looking for clarity and guidance in their businesses. However, coaching is not for people who are not willing to put in the work, adjust their mindset, or resist change. Also, coaching is not therapy, so I can’t help you beyond discussing work-related issues.

If you’ve been facing one or several challenges in your business and feel unsure of how to navigate them, or want an experienced guide to help you work through them quickly, you may benefit from coaching.

  • The Freelance Editors Club is a community of many members, who I tend to equally on group coaching calls and within our online platform. Coaching sessions or a coaching day are the only way to get dedicated one-on-one time for me to focus solely on you and your business.

  • Coaching sessions are 50 minutes each, held over a period of weeks or months; they give us space to work through big challenges and fully implement solutions over time. A coaching day is eight hours, on one day only. It gives you light pressure to move through a problem and solution quickly, while relieving the pressure of one long face-to-face conversation.

I have editors who like both types of coaching for different reasons, so choosing which one is best for you really depends on how you like to work and what challenges you’re hoping to be coached through.

  • No matter the type of coaching you choose, we’ll focus on goal-setting and intentions, work through roadblocks and challenges, and set a clear plan for next steps (homework). Coaching is your time to get help, so make sure you come with a plan!

  • In a coaching dynamic, both parties need to feel the benefit and agree that it’s a good fit. So for any reason at all, either party can cancel at any time. If this happens, you will receive a refund of the prorated amount of your coaching fee that hasn’t been used yet.

Ready to catapult your business and create a life you love?

Coaching is just as good for your business as it is for your life—so buckle up and let’s take the journey you’ve always been destined for. We’ll start with a free 15-minute call to get to know each other better
